Its because after the car accident, MC was in a bad mental state and failed the college entrance exams. Though he could retake it again, it was basically a sign that MC's life plans were falling apart. ML's life was already unstable on its own already. They wanted to be together but the mom realized that it would be hard for them to do so seeing as they're both in such delicate time of their lives. So she suggested they get together when they're older (probably bc they'd be more mature, have more freedom and stability)
