High society unfortunately doesn’t work that way. You can’t be a friend of a commoner unless they were a wealthy merchant who had an equivalent income as a low ranking noble. There’s a lot of strict rules about nobility and “fraternising with the lower classes” and they exist to today in any country with a royal family and nobility still intact. Having her as a maid is a really good way to have her stay but also give her an opportunity to marry above her social station. Some really competent knights can earn a low ranking title and butlers/secretaries are usually nobles so being friendly with them can open doors for you as a commoner to a higher station, either through marriage or business. This was actually the kindest thing to do outside of buying her a noble title (the emperor wouldn’t have approved it so that wouldn’t work.)

Yeah I get your point, and nobility rules are def strict — but I guess it’s kinda my fault for hoping they’d become friends lol. Like… her loved ones literally died in the OG plot for the OG FL (even if Daisy wasn’t a bad person), so keeping her that close as a personal maid felt more like lowkey surveillance than actual kindness. And idk, wouldn’t that risk exposing their plans?? It just didn’t feel like real trust or friendship. Plus they just met — she’s a random stranger fleeing assassins, so “raising her status” that fast feels weird and unrealistic tbh.( ̄∇ ̄")

I too wouldn’t trust any book character I read. Unreliable narrators exist so it makes sense she’s wary. Even if it feels unrealistic to you, it’s because you aren’t in high society nobility. The current king of my country actually wanted to marry someone below his station and was forced into a loveless marriage because he couldn’t break the rules. His wife was known for her many many affairs but still a woman of higher status was allowed but a lower status wasn’t. When she died, he said fuck it and married the woman he loved anyway but the royal family still made it known she wasn’t welcome. He’s only king now because his mother died and his brother is known for a criminal act so no one would follow him. I’m telling this story because it happens even today that people choose high society and its rules over their own personal beliefs and judgements because that’s what is expected of them. It’s actually really rare to find a noble or royal who can choose to do something they’d like to do without having to think of the rules. They work fast cause they have money and workers to make it happen fast. It’s a different world to the one we live in, that’s all.
Am I the only one who didn't like her making Daisy a maid instead of letting her stay as a friend?
