Istg if you look into the author's Instagram it's very visible they're in a relationship, like they hold hands or lay in bed together. I'm not sure myself much but i think rn the focus is on them forming trust with each other, who knows?

Someone also asked if the boy was gay and he said “I think so but he’s the only one.” So yeah take it as you will.
