Just because we have the "luxury" as you call it, to read it for free does not mean people can't complain about something they don't like. I haven't rated anything 1-Star tho. If I did, A 1-star rating is a vague signal, while a negative comment is a message—either thoughtful critique or emotional reaction.
Alone, a 1-star with no words often feels like a drive-by.. maybe it's the art or the lack of direction of a story.
Star rating is not directly tied to the "creative" choices and preference of the author, but the overall rating of the story as something that lacks professionalism or like it's written by a 5-year old. Who knows. But it says nothing about the BDSM or explicit content of the story
