He needs a dog.

If I was him, I'd get myself a dog. Hanging out in point blank nowhere alone, even with a weapon is not the safest thing. He wouldn't feel so lonely and the dog will have his back (two are better then one). Not only do dogs have a good sense of smell and will tell when a coyote is coming but they're also surprisingly good at guessing a person's character. So if Todd is up to something, the MC wouldn't be alone in dealing with him.
