What mean is doing what you belive is good intention only lessen your wrong doing a bit in the best case, not erasing it. For example, a father beating their child because he's think it will make him tougher. The father thinks his intention is good but that does not mean what he doing is right.

And the dad does seem to want to fix the relationship with his son. He claims him as his son and not a reincarnation of the Martial Alliance Leader's son.
And for these two, that might be as loving a relationship as they can muster considering how what they've been through has changed them, especially MC.
