You know, I've had this thought for awhile. Mice in Asian folklore tend to be very cunning and smart. Sometimes they're ven portrayed as tso-faced tricksters.

For example, the story of the 12 Zodiacs. The reason the mouse is firdt in the cycle is because when they started their pilgrimage to see Buddha, the mouse convinced the Ox to let him ride on his back by aaying how small and weak he is. When they got close to their destination, the mouse quickly jumped off the Ox's back and ran through the finish line, therefore becoming the first animal in the cycle.

Since this story tend to follow some folklore characteristics of animals, I was a little surprised to see the mice characterized as not cunning and actually weak.
