They don't really give the ranks of the houses which makes things kinda confusing.
I think the Lamboadi are a Duchy as they are considered the next most powerful to the Royal family.
I'm guessing that Sershaw is a Marquis or possibly a County.
Gallahan was given lands and title in Sershaws territory, not control over the entirety of Sershaw. Cheshire is most likely a Baroney or possibly a Viscounty.
Large territories like Duchies, Margraviates and Counties are broken up into smaller pieces and given to lower ranking nobles to rule since it's difficult for a high ranked noble to effectively rule such a vast area.
Usually these lower ranked nobles will serve the higher ranked noble closely. The high ranked noble will have alot of control over those low ranked families and usually they are in control of who gets to rule the parts of their territory. However the King has the power to give and take land as he pleases. He has to be careful though because if he interferes to much it will piss off the nobles which will be detrimental to him.
I'm guessing Cheshire was a territory where there was no longer a noble family in charge, so the King felt he could give it away.
Think of Sershaw like a state, the lord of Sershaw is the Governor, and all the nobles beneath are Mayors with different hierarchy levels based on how successful their territory is.

When he was given the land the madam of Sershaw said they would be neighbors. So no he doesn't own her land, and the guy is her successor
