The autor is maybe implying the characteristic of a dog being loyal and obidient not like in a literal way. Also the colar and cage is common for criminals in that setting(old times) specially if the criminal posses grave threat. Basically, the portrayal in this story is pretty normal. Well, these are just my opinions but i hope these gives a lil light in the implication of the story. I also feel bad for the kid but what the mc said is reasonable.

I do understand the metaphor behind implying he was a dog but even then I have my gripes with brown characters following their loyal masters around and being reduced to loyal servants. As for the context of which the story is set in, I don’t know if it is entirely relevant to the point I’m expressing, which is a personal disgust at this particular choice and trope matter what sort of world it is set in. I don’t know if the layers of nobility, the power structures etc. make it better or worse.
The story was going so good but man do I hate when brown (and any character really) start talking about being dogs. The collar and cage was the cherry on top :/
