Tbf, even as a child Doyoon felt guilty to ask his mom to stay. Its no wonder he forgave her, bc he internalizes some of the self-blame for his mother's abuse. He hasn't come to term that an adult leaving a child in an abu$ive situation is never okay. He thinks its okay rn bc it was him who was in that situation.
Often victims don't see how they don't deserve to be in a bad situation and justify the actions of the abuser. Doyoon hates his father bc he was the real abuser in the situation but hasn't understood that his mom was just as bad to leave him there. Bc she knew how bad he was and still left a defeseless child there.
This is why people ask ones in bad relationships "what would you tell your bestfriend if they were in this situation?", so that the victim can get a third person perspective on their relationship. Doyoon needs to ask himself if he was in a situation where he was being abu$ed would he leave his 10yo child and go away to never look back..
Did the author really thought we would think like Doyoon??? If Doyoon didn't get to the second chance now and the author told us this story about his mom, would we forgive the mom? No, some of you just forgive her because Doyoon is now living his best life, but that "mom" is living her comfortable life while Doyoon was living with an abuser and miserable before dying.
