I guess doing it for hobby is different than having to do it for work
Getting paid to do research means you have to provide results and also are limited on what you research.
Research for the love of the game can yield no results or end in failure or have no specific end goal in mind and that's kind of what he's going for.
So getting a job would be stifling.
