I totally agree with you. Its heartbreaking but it rubbed me the wrong way hearing MC say the ex abandoned him but to be fair its like he just went to sleep and woke up single so it would be like that for him. Granted I'm still early on but its just a shitty situation all around. Even in the flashbacks you can kinda see the Ex felt secondary to MC's love of photography and not only did he not get reassurance from MC, he ended up being left hanging for 5 whole years bc of that very photography that pulled them apart. And ya imagine being the boyfriend of the ex and having walking baggage come up to you when you're already fully invested in a relationship.
Totally agree with you that it's a lose lose situation for everyone involved.
I also feel more sympathy for the ex than MC coz that's 5yrs of grieving. 1yr is already long but 5?? Not like ex knows MC was in a coma.
