So theory, I think the ML was not conceived with consent from the Duke. (Now after reading chapter 15, i believe it more due to the duchess's phrasing about ML's mother) There were so odd things about some of their behaviors especially from the duchess, she intentionally gave the FL the room intended for the son out of spite but after that she doesn't do anything malicious to either of them. So it could just be the case that the Duke and duchess are fighting behind close doors and, don't want innocent children to get into the crossfire or the Duke explained the circumstances of the ML's birth. Also the Duke and duchess seem pretty chill with each other
