You can take it the direct way or the philosophical way. Direct way, entity that tricked the MC. Philosophical, the easiest way to explain it, wolf in sheep’s clothing.

I understand at face value that Dennis has been deceived into falling in love with Todd who is supposed to be some sort of 'wolf' in this but how on earth is one man going to be dragging a whole herd of sheep down a cliff
