Backstories work for understanding why he is the way he is, not to excuse his actions. Character's arcs, their pasts, allow us to understand their mannerisms and behaviors in the current timeline. I don't understand why people don't know how storytelling works? It's not 'cheap writing,' that's how character arcs work.
Why would we want a character that is only an asshole for the sake of being an asshole without any explanation? That would be more boring and pointless, tbh.

I'm glad some people are seeing thru the BS of the ml's shitty behavior despite his so-called sad past. Which doesn't excuse his current abusive behavior to Dan.
I'm sick of authors using the "tragic past" card to try and redeem a shitty character and make us feel sorry for them.
We need present moment redemption GROVELING arc not a cliche redemption that uses some past childhood trauma
