He’s definitely unstable because he has been resonating with his past life memories, been accumulating corruption, and got smacked with demonic energy by Lorena. I don’t think he actually loved her in either life since Lorena’s influence prevented him from viewing/treating her in any positive way from the moment she arrived.
He feels a certain guilt, emptiness, and longing for her which he doesn’t understand in the context of his second life. It feels more like the guilt of crushing an innocent soul who only ever tried to live up to the Nacht name. He doesn’t understand where these emotions are coming from, but they make him sensitive to her passive forms of rejection towards him.
That immense feeling of unknown guilt and isolation made it easier for him to develop the seeds of corruption in his mind, and Lorena’s attempt at dark magic mind control tipped him over the edge
