Oh course one doesn’t need to write a book to tell a good one from a bad one. But one would need to be literate to get the credentials to make such a general statement. You claimed to know better than the author in terms of ways she chose to portray her characters. That would AT LEAST infer that you know how to write better than her. But you don’t.
