Yes it does happen, specifically in this case Japan, where the societal norm is to not be different as it's seen as rude or whatever, which is why fashion styles like gyaru was created to rebel against this.

These get comments mostly online, where it can reach a wide audience who also shares the same mindset and hobbies. But it’s true ppl irl will gossip and make fun of anyone who dresses up and doesn’t blend into the basic style. I’ve seen so many posts of girls who dress up all the time for schools and on snap stories, ppl would be making fun of girls like “wtf is she wearing?? Lmaooo”
