dude, the backstory isn’t meant to make us “feel bad” it’s meant to tell us HOW he ended up like he did. he wasn’t taught no better, ended up in a sport that rewards violence so that’s ALL he knows, and it’s setting the character up to realize that and decide to be better. you don’t need to feel sorry for a character to understand them, idk if you know this but that’s how a LOT of stories go, and even real life sometimes.

dude, in REAL LIFE, there are 2 ways a person can turn out when they grow up in a neglected and abused environment, they either turn out like Dan, a kind and empathetic person who doesn’t want to harm people, or they end up repeating the cycle like JK. it’s not an excuse and it’s not justifying his behavior, he’s still a shitty person, he’s still wrong, but 2 things can be true at once. JK is a shitty person and an abuser, and he also had a shitty childhood that added into him being the way he is, that’s it. that’s all the author is saying, you can have 2 people with very similar childhoods and they end up 2 different people. that’s how life works, and this author is just mirroring that. if you don’t like it, don’t read the story, idk what to tell you. but him having a shitty childhood isn’t meant to make you feel bad, it’s meant to show you that, just like a person who had an amazing up bringing, it can and DOES affect how you are as an adult.
