So the reason he asks that is because he has feeling for Eki and by rejecting the engagement he will be declaring against his only potential ally the first prince. Now he has made an enemy of the whole empire (emperor hated him and 2nd prince hate his guts). This will essentially affect his squire (who is already being targeted by the 2nd prince).instead of hin protecting his squire he might put her and her family in danger.
