I typed out a whole explanation then mangago logged me out without saving so I’ll make a “quick” version. It’s not always inserting yourself as a character but emotional input. If character is in terrible relationship you long for them to get out. If character is obtuse you’re angry bc you would never be that dumb. You might think a character is hot. You might get gratification from sex scenes. If there is a love rival you might dislike them for getting in the way. You might be suspicious of the best friend getting too close before the narrative has hinted they are a threat. Stuff like that is what I mean. Obviously I don’t know if you do any of these but I think we can agree this is common. Most ppl inject a bit of their emotions/self into how they engage with a story. The highest level is self inserting yourself as the mc. I guess you can say I wasn’t emotionally invested in this story but I weirdly like that about it
This is the most “you know what, good for them” couple ive read. It’s so strange bc most romances you insert yourself in the story in some shape or form but Ive never felt so much like an observer
