Yes this!! Despite this being fantasy, this is a historical story, and we always have to remember we can't and shouldn't view the past with the norms of today - ie. concepts of homo/heterosexuality are fairly recent, and technically did not exist to people the same they do now. Queer people have always existed, but they didn't have the same labels and definitions we have today, and we shouldn't push to do so. Saying this basically, that while the idea of the two getting together may irk some people today, it may not be so for the characters / for the norms of the time/their world. Ofc people are valid in sharing their opinions too ╮( ̄▽ ̄)╭
Also, I honestly don't think the age gap is as much as most people seem to think? I may remember wrong, but I have a memory that Anna's mum might've been in her teens when she fell pregrant (16-19), and we see a memory where Franz(?) is about 5, around that time, so their age gap could be as short as roughly 10 years, or stretch to 15, maybe some more. Not bad at all.
If I remember the ages right, that would make Franz to be in his mid-20s, and Anna's mum mid-to-late-30s, at most early 40s. Not at all a bad age gap. Also like no matter the age gap, they met as adults, are adults, there just isn't anything inappropriate in there that I could see.
I ship them so bad. I'm down for the age gap romance. If you think of it from historical perspective, age gap romances are really a thing. What I appreciate is that this time the woman is older as compared to other historical-romance-lighthearted and/or dark, its usually the man who is older.
