It can mean lots of things, it could've meant better but he said used to, as in being by each other side and that could mean how he used Ian guilt as insurance to stay by him. But they can't because if he want to start anew he needs to leave the gang and that's not happening as he still plans to jump the wedding. No one is misinterpreting because if he wanted start new he would say so but he said use to as sticking together regardless of the situation (but that can't really happen)
