And that gradually falling in love with a guy who accepts you and who you get along with is great. Don't make the generic and omnipresent Black-hair red-eyes guy the ML. He had his chance, he chose not to take it for years. Berne is so nice, respectful, understanding of the fact that she loved someone before (not common for this era), that I KNOW the FL will be happy with him if he isn't made evil.
