bc the previous saintess died and he wanted to marry the next saintess so he got together with the most probable future saintess (aka the girl with the most powerful holy powers)
idk if that's it though cause he had some reactions that made it seem like he wasn't 100% happy doing that
the reason he's unhappy is probably bc he "had to" get with the new saintess like for political reasons but actually loved his fiancee. it doesn't change his reason
