Ear piercings are against Japanese school dress code. They also have other restrictions against hair color, makeup, nail polish, and jewelry. I believe that in uni, they don't care about those things since they treat you as an adult. ofc US vs japan will be very different lol!! culture and values are totally different
Authors usually exaggerated the issue for storytelling purposes but yes some schools in many countries dont allow wear piercing, jeans, dye hair, long hair etc. In my country I have schools that don't give a shit and schools that forbidden everything from long hair, jeans to makeup. Most public schools are private so they can set any rules they wish (but they get government funding).
In Japan there are two types of earrings: ones for pierced ears and ones for non pierced ears (clip ons).
"Pierce" (ピアス or piasu) specifically refers to earrings that require a pierced hole
that's not exclusive to japan, there are clip-on earrings everywhere and piercing is always specifically about pierced holes

Just realized that everytime in anime/manga they called it pierced earrings even though it's just a normal way in us wearing an earring in school? (of course not the flashy ones) Are yall also allowed earrings in school or...?
