Because this is fiction where the story only revolves around 2 people's lives. Not majority of the population. That's why characters don't have freedom exactly. Author has that power for them. They're just characters. Real life shouldn't apply. Their actions shouldn't reflect real life.
At no point did I say I hated "that kind of thing." That's your inference!
I don't need to love every character or aspect of a work of fiction for it to entertain me, and even when observing the layers of the characters, I read the context like any other reader with some life experience and cognitive ability.
