Its obvious atp that the king wasnt a good father like it almost seemed like at first but man... he saw him as the crown prince, not as his son Richard. I get what he means by life not feeling real if your like a character playing a role than an actual person
He saw him as a replacement, something to raise quickly to a certain standard so that he could go and rest. From then on Richard’s feeling became irrelevant cause he was make him do it wether he wanted it or not. So yeah everything just became a big masquerade
