Maybe cuz he loved Victor a lot but didn’t see himself to be with him, (like they were time set in the 1800-1900s homophobia was gonna be big back then so I’m guessing he just knew they were doomed)
Victor was a player, he was cocky, cold but deep down a sweetheart since he cared about Victor but didn’t see him like that (my theory, he sees sex as a fun activity and not romantic, he does it with many people and don’t think much of it, while to Victor, who never had romantic or non romantic relationships before to him to was sign that they were both in love with one another, and it means they were lovers, that is how he sees Henry)
