before my word vomit i am making it clear that i like red mansion as a whole but despite my liking of the story i just cannot get over how abrupt the ending is and how much it bothers me

INCOMING SPOILER ABT RED MANSION…

… so basically ive seen far too many comments saying it was genius and it objectively really isnt the whole concept is nice and all but mini mart pretending to lose his memory does not make sense.

first of all we read everything from his perspective so all those hallucinations abt his parents and his thinking processes n even his toxic behaviors thats equally as insane as cheongrim or whatever the hell ml’s name is THOSE WERE ALL DIRECTLY CONVEYED TO US. like yeah hes more thab capable of carrying out unsavory crap for ml but that capability was only possible before the death of his parents.

even in the earlier chapters we see that no matter the current problem or situation, his parents always remained a responsibility he would never overlook. his growing dependence on ml the less contact he had with his parents then following their deaths MADE SENSE. he always cared about his parents.

he only gave a gaf abt ml because they grew sick and were unable to care for him so he grew up unfamiliar with how relationships work. it worsened cuz red mansion is the farthest thing from normal. so of course mini mart clung to the first thing that gave him attention. he grew to become this manipulative little freak cuz that was the only way for someone in his shoes to survive in a place like red mansion.

so the chapters leading up to the ending made sense EXCEPT FOR THE ENDING ITSELF. his deteriorating mental state was far too detailed even in his thoughts to just be ignored at the very end. so im saying that the author prob didnt know how to end the story and planned to end with “oh hes equally as toxic” but just couldnt find a proper way to transition to that.

UNLESS it was said somewhere that we are reading this all from ml’s perspective as he reads through mini mart’s journal. it would make sense that way. if that truly is how the whole thing was framed feel free to call me stupid cuz i genuinely cannot be bothered to reread just to confirm

i liked it at the beginning but i felt like it went downhill when ml started caring for minimart and feeling bad for him and having him stay at his home and stuff idk i felt like if it took a more toxic route it would have been better and more suitable for the overall atmosphere of the story

i actually liked that development of ml. i feel like it was the right decision on the author’s part cuz ml became more impulsive and it justified him being obsessive but i also feel like it could have been portrayed in a more sinister way or at least in a way that suited the atmosphere in the beginning cuz i also agree that the start was when the story was at its strongest
