It's more complicated than that. Almost all of the characters has their own issues. Shang family foundation is pretty shaky with the mother as their glue (and the mother has her own mental problem). Just continue to read and enjoy the story :)
Trust me when I say, the girl's problems with her new adopted family are only 2% of the overall plot in this story... Soon enough, they fade to nothing, only to make way for new, and completely different, non-family-related, BIGGER problems... There's a lot going on behind the scenes, you just have to keep on reading to find out.
