I think its probably meant for those who want to see it as a tragedy- like after Luan did that to clauden, clauden could have rejected him and ran away if he was fully broken by what Laun did, kinda for those people who like pain and tragedy lol
I think if you hold it with jusy the main story, the message is “mistakes have consequences”
but if you include the side stories it becomes “persist in atoning for the past, and you might be able to fix the present”
I don't see then need for main and side story seperation
