The heteronormativity of it all

Kibayashi telling Yoshiki he must be normal, very akin to queer people being told they must be “normal” and live within the confines of what cishet society deems correct and acceptable. Oh horror yaoi you will always be peak. (Also I really am afraid this is gonna end with “hikaru” returning to the other side so that Yoshiki could properly grieve and move on and also fully accept himself as gay and live in his truth in Tokyo which is not a bad thing for Yoshiki, but fills me with immense sadness for “hikaru.”)

I love this post because it captures the essence of Yoshiki's character in the manga perfectly. He is queer and was in love with his best friend, but had to hide it from everyone. Especially Hikaru.

That's the entire essence of the manga, people having to hide their true selves and pretend to be someone they aren't ("Hikaru" is actually an entity, Asako can hear impurities, Tanaka is blind, etc.) It's really a very complex theme that is explored in a very unique way, and I love that about this manga.
