Can you spoil a bit what huge part of the novel they got rid of?

if my memory is correct, when he used the teleporting shit. He was met & with a family. He wasn’t in the hospital & immediately met the nsa guy, he bonded with the family who helped him & became close with them. He doesn’t immediately go ahead and help ML out because like I said, was hiding from the nsa & ML.
