He chose his path to be abusive and break her more rather than parting ways in a normal way. The back story was a great way to show how much people can change for the worse with bad decisions fueled by bad circumstances. Cheating wasn't even the main factor for me. It was blaming someone else for the choice he made, making her tag along and then blaming her for "ruining his life"
