Maybe they tried breeding between human and hybrid
It kind of feels like a cop out but I think the big twist is that the animal hybrids might be aliens. Like the anime parasite so I can imagine if this all started in the hospital maybe somebody came in with this alien creature thing and it is taking over people's bodies and rewriting their DNA and jumping from host to host? Even though personally I really wanted to see it be a man made creature beyond human understanding I don't know for some reason aliens always feels like a cop out but that's my best guess!
Omg I didn’t even think about that!! I definitely agree, tho I too would prefer if it was man made since I feel like humans being cruel is much more interesting than alien hosts
