I’ll be honest, I am moved by this chapter. But I am NOT, in any way shape or form, emphasizing with him. His actions and personality is the WORST, but I see this chapter as something more than just “a sad backstory”.
Sion is a bad person, I think we can call agree with that. For me, I don’t think the author wrote him out to be someone worth emphasizing, but rather a character worth analyzing/understanding. If the author REALLY wanted us readers to sympathize/empathize with Sion, then they would’ve written Seonu as someone submissive; someone who would’ve forgiven every wrongdoing Sion had committed, someone who would never question Sion’s intentions and actions. But we can see that Seonu never lets Sion go easily whenever Seonu questions his sincerity, and he only stops when Sion gave him a reason not to question him further (through lying, manipulation, and gaslighting).
MAJOR SPOILERS (ENDING): In the novel, although Seonu still has feelings for Sion, he never truly forgives Sion for the actions he took to trap and cling onto Seonu. After a lot of fights between the both of them, Sion finally decided to leave him alone because he now knows that it is for the best. In the end, they got together and Sion seems like he genuinely realy regrets doing all the things he did to Seonu.
This chapter gave us a glimpse into how Sion grew feelings for Seonu, and although the love he holds for Seonu is far from healthy, he is still very much infatuated by Seonu as a person. Sion is considered a mistake by his biological father, whereas his biological mother thought of Sion as a way to get rich. We can see that Sion regarded himself as nothing more than a burden, and that is what he thought of himself until he met Seonu. (Again, NOT empathizing with him. Just stating the facts and trying to understand who Sion is as a character.) Seonu gave Sion meaning, he thought of Sion as someone worthy of love. When you grew up thinking you are worth nothing like Sion, who wouldn’t be captivated by someone like Seonu? Someone who gave him a reason to keep going, to keep living. In this chapter, Sion describe Seonu as his reason to live. Seonu is the air that Sion breathes, the sun that Sion bathes in, the ocean that kept him floating. He’s in love. And Sion’s love for Seonu is something so beautiful, that it becomes destructive to them and everyone around them.
But yeah that’s all for me yapping ahhahdj sorry if it’s long I just wanted to share my thoughts about this manhwa and for me, I think it’s well-written. But I get why this manhwa isn’t everyone’s cup of tea :) again sorry for the long paragraph lol…

don’t get me wrong, it’s in your face how he feels for seonu. but I think this chapter made it worse for me in terms of accountability for sion. how can you dedicate your whole meaning of life to seonu but be totally okay with him not knowing the truth behind meeting in the first place. from enjoying the bullying, the crying kink, to the isolation from ppl that wanted to be friends with him. it just makes his sincerity fraudulent and meaningless

Totally! I agree with what you’re saying.
It baffles me how much Sion loves Seonu, but it’s genuinely disappointing how he wants to control Seonu and the life that he lives. Sion never respected Seonu as a person, and it shows. He always wanted things to go his way, and he’s willing to use the people Seonu cares about against him.
But yeah my whole rant up there was just me analyzing Sion as a character, hope you don’t mind how much I get into stuff like this hahsfsfghj
I can tell some of y’all are new here for toxic semes in bl because this is the same cookie cutter tragic backstory that will supposedly excuse their behavior towards the ml and y’all stay eating it up while im sitting here confused how this is enough to empathize with the things he did. IDGAF bc he literally got turned on by seonu crying from getting pummeled
