Maybe some of it is genetic. But it is more likely triggered by his fathers abusive behaivior. Genetics for mental illness are influenced by enviromental things too. Children with unloving mother develop a depression gene that they can also give to their children but it is switched of when they raise their children loving (love in that context means: positive body contact, praising and gentleness and of course no abuse)
