    Nobody said it excuses his actions though. A backstory isn’t about giving him a free pass, it’s there to show cause and effect. Authors use backstory as a narrative tool to flesh out a character, to show what shaped them and why they act the way they do now. That adds depth, not absolution. So why do some of you all always jump to the conclusion that the author’s trying to excuse them...
