Yes, people are just not reading carefully or putting the context together. The friend (Jaekyung) liked another guy in the past (unrelated to our couple), but he was straight and didn't reciprocate.
So he was afraid Hangyul would be as hurt as he was back then, hence it was hard watching him insist on liking Robin (whom they both had assumed was straight and would never change).
