Can’t we just be nice to Lydia - just a tiny bit?

Christ, I was abused by my irl parents and I still think Lydia needs more grace from the audience. In my real ass life my parents have never tried to make amends for what they did to me. At least this woman is trying! I even like that she is too overbearing and fucks up at times - if she were just immediately reformed and perfect like it was that easy it would be a disgrace to her victim. Unlike most other OI’s with abusive parents who are reformed she isn’t working on herself because her daughter changed personality - SHE fucked up and she knows it. She is throwing everything into this and fuck me would I have appreciated that sort of love from my family.

    EXACTLY
She's an imperfect character who screwed up and is trying
That doesn't immediately mean she's a saintess, but it also doesn't mean we should just hate her
People ask for characters with depth, but absolutely can't handle it when they get one

If she was the MC she wouldn’t get nearly this amount of flak, I swear. She’s literally going through a redemption arc right now of her own volition. If we don’t allow bad people to ever be redeemed then what’s the point of them atoning in the first place?

THANK YOU!!!, I HAVE BEEN SAYING THIS SINCE THE BEGGINING!!! there's like a billion time return manhwas were the MC was a horrible human and then tries to redeem themselves after returning but no one seems to ever bring up any of the bad things they did since they're too busy fangirling over the romance

Oh yeah, I just want to make it clear that if Lyrica remembers her previous life and didn’t want to forgive her mother that would be SO fair. She wronged her daughter and she is not owed forgiveness from her victim (although Lyrica is a saint so she probably would anyway). I’m just saying that as an audience we shouldn’t hate her with such vitriol when she is trying her damndest to right those wrongs. I appreciate seeing an abuser genuinely try to atone. I prefer Lyrica overcoming her messy, complicated, overbearing, mother over a one-dimensional villain mother. I hope they both end up happy.

i know, but this woman should not be around her daughter. You talked about disgracing the victim, but maybe I'm crazy for thinking this (I'm not since even the law agrees with me apparently) she should not be around her daughter. This woman was a drunk deadbeat who physically abused her for ages, made her own 8 year old daughter work to support them, emotionally abused and neglected her. And after just one day she just magically changed and everything is supposed to be forgiven because that little girl who wanted to be loved so bad, forgave her because her mommy said she loved her. No. This little girl deserved to have new parents who didn't have a history of abuse and wouldn't lash out at her.

I mean, in the real world children who are in foster care or even as far as being actively adopted can be returned to their birth parents if they put in the work. I’ve had a family member lose out on adopting a child for this very reason.

I’m 100% with you that Lyrica should not be with Lydia in the first timeline but my argument is that Lydia is trying very hard and is not a perfect human being. Like I said, if she was immediately perfect and didn’t make mistakes then that would be an issue to me. You don’t go from timeline 1 Lydia to reformed with no bumps along the way - that shouldn’t be possible and would be unbelievably unrealistic. Being a good parent is not something that naturally comes to MANY people and Lydia is unlearning a lot of shit. This isn’t the modern day and she can’t exactly go to classes to learn this! Lyrica never deserved any of this (no child does) but the same as the real world we should not try to separate loving families if they’re not irreparably dysfunctional which they unequivocally pass at this point.

but her method of change is just love bombing someone who can't realize that she has more worth.

That’s a very unfair assessment of the situation. I’m going to skip past the obvious 180 in their living situation - look at the recent hunt arc. Lydia who was going to kill Lyrica’s follower instead stops and follows her daughter’s lead. Lyrica shows her mother she is capable and Lydia shows she has learnt from her past mistakes. Previously, she would’ve definitely forced them apart and she definitely would have if Lyrica hadn’t have stepped in. We need to allow her to have these moments of growth where she realises that Lyrica is an autonomous person who does not need constant oversight.

Just recently she is disappointed that Lyrica goes to meet her bio father and has some unkind thoughts but she does not reflect them in how she treats her child. Trust me, many people have unsavoury thoughts and feelings they choose to not express in the real world. This is a character with so much humanity and a surprising amount of reality embedded into her writing. It would be a true shame to never allow this sort of character to exist.

She even waited until this chapter to talk to Lyrica’s kinda boyfriend when she could’ve interfered far earlier and gotten rid of him if she felt so inclined. It wouldn’t even be unjustified by that society’s standards given he is the son of an actually irredeemably evil woman who could easily be out to hurt Lyrica.

What I’m saying is you can see her growth and her change in many ways. Classifying it all as love bombing is just dismissive and untrue. You might not like her change but that doesn’t mean it isn’t there.
