Except Evan isn't actually gay. He is, at best, bi-curious and, at worst, using Jonathan to research a role as a gay man for a part in a play/movie. That is what Chris meant by "play gays" and why Evan was referring to movie scenes and being all dramatic when they kissed while watching a movie. Evan is far more interested in researching his role than he is in Jonathan as an actual lover.
