Well technically they're the same person (it's reincarnation) but he can't see the current version of MC only the past and therefore placing current MC on the same pedestal he put Past MC on (aka not seeing his current self and basically replacing Past MC)

guys i’m thinking abt reading this but i read the top reviews and they said that ML might be using MC as a replacement for a past life lover??? is this true? because i don’t like replacement lover stories they piss me off real bad.
