you think gay people are safe in america? then why did some freaks beat up my friend and her sister to the point where they ended up in the hospital when they're from a BlUe StAtE? i'll tell you why: its because they were hugging each other and the freaks thought they were gay <3 and no im not assuming it was because of this the freaks themselves said it was because they were sick of the fags acting like theyre normal :)

Being in an open minded country doesn't matter, cus at the end of the day people are still very much judgy, for example, I'm bisexual, i love being bisexual, many of our relatives are gay, my cousin is actually gay, so my parents are very accepting of LGBTQ+ but that doesn't mean they wont "joke" about queerness, it's situations like that, that makes it hard for a queer person to fully flaunt who they are out in public.

Like we know lots of people are accepting, but at the same time in the back of your mind you know there are judgy people mixed in that "accepting people", you get paranoid, you overthink, what if this person think that, what if this person is homophobic.
So even if you are comfortable of who you are, it still takes a whole lot of courage to be who you are in front of many other people

i just want to point what i think the author is showing in this chapter. your personal experience and perspective unfortunately isn’t always how it plays out in real life. legal acceptance does not mean social acceptance, even if it’s a blue state. the author included the scene with luke’s old classmate on purpose, including the pressure to get back together with his ex. it shows prejudice still exists in their state, and that what is expected of him, is to date a woman. even an unhealthy and toxic relationship is more socially accepted than his current relationship.

at the end of the day their relationship is in a fragile phase. the author shows what being in a gay relationship is like after living your whole life thinking you’re straight. luke talks about having to relearn how to act in public, and how it’s difficult to not be able to be openly affectionate with your partner, because it goes against everything from his previous relationship. that it’s almost like being in a relationship for the first time. considering they just mutually confirmed their feelings, facing prejudice could hurt them. you never truly know what reaction you will get and it’s best to play it safe and be careful in public. because it could ruin their relationship
