I don't think they are the same

Leo grew up in an environment where he could only think of his survival, it definitely can thwart emotional growth and result in apathetic behaviour, whereas the master grew in a rich environment with seemingly no real distress, you could say it's in his nature to be apathetic borderline psychopathic. So yeah for him to feel validated by Leo's lack of emotion and ambitions and regarding it as sth commendable is meh. Leo is not an asshole, he is a victim of his environmental/social status. The master has no excuses for his apathetic behaviour, it's not the same ~

i find it really weird that you "excuse for his behaviour"... why is it wrong? he didnt do anything bad because of it... some people are just born like this. And if it wrong and weird behavior, then it doesnt matter that leo went through trauma, that is his personality now and therefore is an asshole just the same

Well it would have been best for Leo to found a mentor that could humanize him, show him kindness and compassion, (I just wanna hug this kid dammit!) that's probably what bothered me, he is a bad influence and he is shaping Leo to his image (while validating himself) which is not the best kind of person to become. So yeah I don't really like his character but he is interesting none the less. it explains, as you said, why Leo is like that, and hopefully Arte can bring out a more human side to him.
