This brings up a question for the new character. If his family is destined to not have a string how do they keep ending up with kids? Do they just have a lot of loveless sex and keep the kids they spawn?
As for cutting the string, it will most likely reattach since both of them seem to yearn for the other. The new guy was hinting at it, but since the main character could say nothing but good things about the guy it's love, in some sense but love.
