He mother didnt get off free. She was wanted first. The bharats cut her off and let her took the fall. Since she is in hiding, their anger turned to lily by association as her daughter. So since lydia is a witch she is a witch too. And persecuted her. Lily probably thinks if she die then maybe her mother can live. So she accepted her death. Prayed her mother to be happy thinking she will survive. But lydia was still caught and killed
