We are seeing his perspective and in his mind, he never hurt her. He def already was abusing her at this point so she was playing the fawn until she could escape with marriage, only for it never to pan out until she got married to our ML
It looks like before this decision she wasn't abused in this family? I honestly don't remember. I only remember that Ruby was always pretending because she was afraid of her father and brother.
