Being poor can cancel out the pretty, specially in monarchies, there's a reason why a lot a rich people don't mingle with poor people even if they're pretty, or they will use you for your beauty and complain about your lack of class and poor mentality behind your back, eventually leaving you to dust after using you like princes and kings used to do to women before, you'll always be trash to them, and the people that work for them (even if poor as well) also sneer at you even if you're pretty, because how dare this poor gold digger be near such important people.
Easiest example is exclusive fancy restaurants, you can go all dolled up but they know their own people, if you're not rich you're not getting anywhere near their very special tables, and some workers ignore you in order to attend them first.

Okay, speaking realistically, He is poor and dumb. Those kind of people would just die in the ditch in this time period getting killed and raped. The highest he can get if he is lucky is being some noble's mistress. Also, I guess they had classes hierarchy in this and the goldfish being the very low one in the pyramid.
Honestly however much i think about it this is very unrealistic. *says stupidly while talking about a fucking fish based fantasy world* but hear me out I know for a fact that pretty privilege is real... so how come every single person has been bullying the prettiest baby in this universe? Unless their beauty standard is different but that doesn't seem to be the case!
