Because of his track record in soccer during middle school, a professional team was interested in recruiting him (likely for their club academy or youth/junior team). He got into the accident alongside an official/rep from the team after his middle school graduation.
While he’s physically fine (to the point of not needing rehab anymore), and could begin playing soccer again, he chose not to do so. He’s a guy who’s has strange misfortunes all his life, with things he loves constantly disappearing/being taken away/ leaving (chapter 14). He decided to stop pursuing football and even stop thinking about it because like the accident, likely another misfortune would occur that would keep him from pursuing the sport. He also got scared of his misfortune befalling and yeon, which is why he decided to stop thinking about him too.
